View out to sea from Porthpean Beach

Porthpean is a coastal village just 2 miles outside St Austell and has a safe sandy sheltered beach popular with families. There are high cliffs surrounding the beach which are home to nesting seabirds and lots of rock pools rich in sealife. As Porthpean has the nearest beach to St Austell, it is very popular in the summer months.A regular bus service (Western Greyhound no. 525) runs from St Austell Station to the top of the village. From here you can walk down the hill to the beach below.

The wooded slopes leading down to the sea give a southern charm to the scene. Usually the sea is a deep blue and calm – ideal for swimming. There is sand along the shore and a sea wall at the back with cafe, deck chairs etc.
The actual village of Porthpean with its little church is at the top of a very steep hill overlooking the bay.
