Polgooth was once a busy mining village – Polgooth Mine was one of the richest and largest mines in the county with over 50 shafts producing tin and copper. In 1800 over a 1,000 people were employed by the mine. Many of the older buildings in the village are built from the locally quarried Pentewan stone. The Polgooth Inn dates back to the sixteenth century and was formerly the miner’s count house during Polgooth’s mining heyday. Now it is a friendly pub providing quality cask ales and locally sourced food.Families are welcome.
The higgledy-piggledy nature of the settlement is because cottages were fitted in and amongst still working or recently finished mines and processing sites of the early 19th Century.
Up on the hill is St Austell Golf Course, an 18 hole delightful and challenging course with wonderful countryside views. Standing like a sentry over the golf course is the remains of an old engine house – a reminder of the village’s mining past.
