The St Austell Discovery Map is the second map of this series following on from the success of the Newquay Discovery Map. The Discovery Maps are aimed at encouraging people to find out more about their local community, heritage, history and environment whilst promoting the sustainability message and ways to look after, and, at the same time, enjoy our local environment.
Following on from the Newquay map and its website, a committe was put together for St Austell including members from Cornwall Council, The National Trust, Cornwall Wildlife Trust, St Austell Old Cornwall Society, AONB, Trenance Heritage Association, CoaST, the Tourist Information Centre, Cornwall Heritage Trust, Imerys and SRStudio to name just a few.
Over the course of 2009 information was gathered from every corner of the St Austell area and the skills of Simon Riordan of SRStudio were then put to work in illustrating the beautiful town map and St Austell Bay map. Two heritage trails were compiled; Clemo’s Way and White River Way using all the information gleaned from the Trenance Heritage Association and St Austell Old Cornwall Society and after many hours of layout work at SRStudio the artwork for the map was finally printed by Fourway Print of Launceston. The map was distributed to 25,000 homes in the St Austell area with a further 25,000 available free for local distribution outlets such as Tourist Information Centres and St Austell Brewery. In order to make the product sustainable the maps are now available at low cost from various retail outlets around St Austell.
This website which supports the St Austell Discovery Map is able to provide even more information than the Map alone; with its interactive maps, suggestions for Car Free Days Out and lots of help in making our lives more sustainable. Produced by SRStudio, it also enables the people of St Austell to have their say in the Forum where we expect some lively debates!
This project is a fantastic example of what can be achieved by the local people, public and private sector working together to communicate the sustainability message in a fun and interactive way.
