In the seventeenth century, manor courts were held at the Manor House and, as Tewington was the largest of the manors in the parish, it is probable that this building was its town house. The Manor of Tewington was known as Dewintona in the Doomsday Survey and it was the only part of Powder Hundred which was an ancient demesne of the Crown and not let out to tenants. The Sawle family is believed to have come over with William the Conqueror and they acted as stewards for the manor which was based at what we know today as Towan Farm, before later moving to Penrice. They were major landowners and benefactors in the St. Austell area and the town itself.
