Penzance has had a rich history of festivals with the annual Golowan celebrations culminating in Mazey Day, its crowning glory.
On June 23rd each year Penzance would celebrate St John’s Eve, with wild processions swinging flaming torches. Bonfires and fireworks burned and locals would run furiously hand in hand through the streets known as the Serpent Dance.
By the 1880s Golowan celebrations were banned by the increasing popularity of the town as a place for genteel refinement. However in 1991 the tradition was revived once more as a splendid community celebration.
